| The journey began in 1884, with a small factory on the Eastern Bank of river Hooghly. It was named as Garden Reach Workshop (GRW) in 1916. Later, on 19th April 1960, it was taken over by the Government of India. With diversification in engineering products the name was changed to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on 1st Jan 1977.There was no looking back and since then GRSE has delivered more than 600 vessels.
GRSE has emerged as a leading shipyard of India, building a wide array of vessels, from world class Frigates to Fast Interceptor Boats. In keeping with the global trends, GRSE has embarked upon modernization of its infrastructural facilities. On 5th Sep 2006, GRSE got the status of Mini Ratna- Category I.
GRSE Chairman Rear Admiral A.K.Verma, VSM, IN (Retd.) has been bestowed with the “Honor of Excellence” Award by the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee. The Award was bestowed to top industrial leaders, at the inaugural function of Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur (West Bengal).
GRSE has ranked 2nd nationally among Miniratna Companies in the Category of CSR & Sustainability, by a survey conducted by the India Today Group.
GRSE is building the first four Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes (ASWCs) for the country. The 1st of the class (INS Kamorta) was delivered in July 2014 to the Indian Navy and commissioned by the Honorable Raksha Mantri Shri Arun Jaitley on 23 Aug 2014.
GRSE has won the e Gov Awards 2014 in the Category of Technology - Modernisation initiative in PSUs.
GRSE was conferred the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering Performance Excellence Award in the Golden Category (Financial & Operational Strength), for the year 2012-13.
GRSE Director (Finance) Shri K. K. Rai won the BT Star PSU Excellence Award 2014, "The Star PSU Director (Finance) For Outstanding Performance" in the Category of Non Maharatna & Navratna PSUs. This Category not only included all Miniratna Companies of the country but also all State Government's Large and Small PSUs.
GRSE received a Certificate of Appreciation for being a Model Total Quality Management Company by CII for 2013.
GRSE is the first Ship Building organisation in the country and the first DPSU to get accreditation on Integrated Management System harmonizing ISO 14001:2004 (Environment Management System), BS OHSAS 18001:2007 (Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Standard), and EN ISO 50001:2011 (Energy Management System).
GRSE was conferred the PSE Excellence Award 2013 for CSR & Sustainability, in the Miniratna Category. The Award is instituted by Department of Public Enterprises and Indian Chamber of Commerce to recognize and honour the excellent initiatives undertaken by the Central Public Sector Enterprises.
GRSE has won the 2nd Prize (Region C) of the Prestigious Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puroskar (11-12) for Official Language Implementation. The Award was presented by the Honorable President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Sep 14, 2013.
For two consecutive years (2010-11 & 2011-12), GRSE has received the Honorable Raksha Mantri's Award for The Best Performing Shipyard.
GRSE was conferred with 'Caring Company Award - 2013' at the World CSR Congress in Mumbai on February 18, 2013. The Institute of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad conferred CSR –Corporate Governance Award on GRSE in 2012.
GRSE has won the prestigious Raksha Mantri's Award in 2006-07 for Import Substitution in developing a "Common Helicopter Traversing System" for handling both ALH and Seaking Helicopter and Innovation in "Design & Manufacturing of Double Lane Bailey Bridge for a vehicular load upto IRC Class 70R".In the year 2007-08, GRSE also won the Raksha Mantri's Award for Import Substitution in "Indigenisation of Centrifugal Pumps of Russian Origin for Warships and Submarines of Indian Navy".
