Rear Admiral AK Verma, VSM, IN (Retd) after serving in the Indian Navy for 34 years, was appointed Chairman & Managing Director of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited, Kolkata on 01 Nov 2011. He is an alumni of Ranchi University and did his Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur in 1977. After joining Indian Navy, he did his Marine Engineering Specialization course from Naval College of Engineering at Lonavla, Pune and Aeronautical Engineering course from Air Force Technical College, Bangalore.

During his career in the Indian Navy, he has held many prestigious appointments both onboard as well as ashore including Naval Headquarters, Command Headquarters at Mumbai and Kochi, Western Fleet and many operational ships and Air Stations. ‘Vishist Seva Medal’ has been conferred upon him for his distinguished service in the Indian Navy.

He is a strong believer in setting high goals and achieving targets through involvement of all personnel working with him.  Managing men and motivating them to take on new challenges have been his strengths. On taking over as CMD, GRSE Kolkata, he has embarked upon an ambitious plan to transform GRSE from being one of the best shipyards in the country to a truly world class organization.

During his tenure as CMD of GRSE, Kolkata, the Company has already achieved many major milestones and the shipyard has been adjudged the best performing Shipyard of the country for the two consecutive years.

Under his stewardship, the Company has recently delivered two major warships, the first being the most modern state of the art Anti Submarine Warfare Corvette for the Indian Navy.

The other achievement has been the delivery of Mauritius Offshore Patrol Vessel CGS Barracuda, which was recently commissioned at Port Louis, Mauritius in the august presence of the Prime Ministers of the two countries. The ship “Barracuda” is in fact the first export warship built in India.
   
During first three years of his tenure as CMD, he has also been able to bring in various changes in the organization such as improvement in work culture, productivity, turnover, co-ordination amongst various divisions, welfare measures for operatives, expansion of vendor base, strengthening the shipbuilding infrastructure etc.
