M/s. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd., Kolkata is building Five (05) Nos. Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) Class ships for Indian Coast Guard. The contract for construction of these new design FPV ships was concluded on 7th March, 2016.
The entire design of these FPV ships has been developed in-house by GRSE as per requirements specified by Indian Coast Guard. The ship is 50M long, 7.5M wide with a displacement of around 308 Tons. The ship is designed for a maximum speed of 34 knots with an endurance of more than 1500 nautical miles.
The ship is equipped with 03 nos Main Engines with advanced control systems, Water jet units and an ‘Integrated Bridge System’ integrating all Communication and Navigation Systems. These ships are also fitted with 40/60 Gun as main armament and will also have improved habitability features with fully air conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.
The FPV ship is a medium range surface vessel capable for operations in Maritime Zones of India. These fuel efficient & powerful platforms are designed to perform multipurpose operations e.g. patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations.
The keel of this first FPV ship was laid at Dry dock No. 2 at RBD on 15 May 2017. The ship is being launched on 29 Dec 17, within a span of 7 ½ months from keel laying.
Launching of the ship is an important milestone in the life of a ship which actually signifies the birth of the ship. Hence, launching of the ship is traditionally carried out by a lady. Launching of a ship marks completion of Main hull of the ship & putting the ship in water for the first time.
After launching balance fitting out of equipment and ship system would be completed at Rajabagan Dockyard. Finally the ship would be put to sea for trials before commissioning.
